Healthy Meal Planning and Organization

Each weekend, invest ten minutes in meal planning. You'll receive an amazing time-saving payoff when you devote a few minutes each weekend to choosing the coming week's main meals.

By planning ahead, you streamline your shopping lists and help minimize the stressful “What should we eat tonight?” question that keeps cropping up when there's no plan.

You might even invest a few weekend minutes in precooking beans and other legumes. Pre-make some bread dough that you can freeze, then thaw, let rise, and bake later in the week when you want a quick loaf of delicious homemade bread.

Delegate kitchen responsibilities. If you have children, dividing kitchen tasks saves time and brings family members closer together. As soon as the children are old enough, they can set and clear the table, wash dishes, and even help prepare food. In many homes, these shared minutes are a simple, valuable daily ritual of connection.

Keep a step-saver list on hand. Whenever you start to run out of an ingredient, write it down immediately on an easy-access grocery list. Don't wait until you run out: -- that's how you end up making one-item raids on the supermarket. It makes life easier and saves trips to the grocery store when you write down everything that is on “low” before it turns to “empty.”
